[Wednesday, February 9, 2005] On Feb. 5, MESSENGER reached an historic point 30.74 million miles from Earth. Known as "local max," this point was MESSENGER's farthest distance from home before starting back toward Earth for the gravity-assist flyby on Aug. 2.

[Wednesday, February 16, 2005] MESSENGER's X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) instrument underwent calibrations last week, spending five days "looking" at one of the stronger x-ray sources in the sky, the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A.
